Light Engineering

The Light Engineering Sector (LES) sector in Bangladesh consists of over 7,000 firms, employs 800,000 persons and generates an annual revenue of about BDT 9500 crores US$1,600 million). Most of LES output plays a critical role in key national sectors such as agriculture, transportation, construction and RMG.

The LES supply chain comprises firms engaged in metal sourcing, metal preparation, metal cutting, forming & finishing, parts manufacturing, assembly & production of finished goods for a large variety of industrial and household applications. The customer industries range from toothbrush & buckets to auto-parts & parts of machines used in the textile, pharmaceutical and other sectors to diesel engines, irrigation pumps, power tillers etc.

However, most of the firms in the sector are either tiny or small and operate in the un-organized sector. Further the sector needs to renew its assets, upgrade its manpower skills, besides making fresh investments. It also needs to integrate better with the global industry and trends.

SEDF has studied the LE sector in Bangladesh and has commenced interventions through a mix of sector wide initiatives and a few specific projects. Some of the areas include foundry performance, machine shop efficiency, operator training and centrifugal casting whereas current sub sectors include automotive components and agricultural implements. SEDF also assists in linkage projects which involve SMEs who supply to large companies.

SEDF works directly with companies and sector associations and other stakeholders such as financial institutions and training organizations
